One of the major annoyances with using third-party browsers on devices running iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 is the lack of support for Apple Pay. People wanting to make in-browser online payments on e-commerce platforms have no other option but to use Apple’s Safari browser if Apple Pay is their payment option of choice. This lack of Apple Pay support on browsers other than Safari has been bothering Apple Pay users for a while now. However, it now seems Apple has finally decided to address this annoying issue — albeit in a limited manner.
According to Macrumors report recently, Apple was able to open Apple Pay support for a group of third-party browsers selected when the stable version of iOS 16 and Ipados 16 dropped later this year. In fact, for some IOS 16 Beta and Ipados Beta users, this feature is alive. While the fact that Apple has begun to support a third-party browser is the topic of discussion about several Reddit groups centered on Apple for more than a month, a recent tweet by Steve Mosser of Macrumors carrying a topic into focus again.
What browsers are currently supported?
On July 30, Mosser tweeted screenshots that showed how he could use Apple Pay using a third -party browser on the device that runs the latest version of iOS 16 Beta. Steve Mosser and several others confirmed that they could use Apple Pay on Beta iOS 16 and iPados Beta with third -party browsers, including Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Mozilla Firefox. Interestingly, this feature seems to be only activated in the iPhone and tablet version from this browser on the device that runs the Beta iOS 16 Beta or iPados 16.
In particular, the support of Apple Pay continues to avoid the MacOS version of the same third -party browser. According to Mosser, the main reason Apple Pay does not work on the MacOS version of a third -party browser is the fact that on MacOS, this browser uses a different rendering machine from safari. Given that cellular wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay face a lot of competition from cards without contact for transactions in the store, rather strange to see Apple limit the use of Apple Pay on an online platform.
In particular, the arrival of third -party browser support in the Beta iOS 16 and iPad 16 versions does not always mean that the features will ultimately make it to the stable version of this platform later this year. However, we can only hope that before the end of 2022, Apple Pay will become a browser on all Apple platforms.
